      Hi all,

I have just brought over my ’97 Type R 555 from the UK. A new rocker cover gasket was fitted just before I came over. I drove all the way from Esbjerg to Karlskrona without a problem. Then after a week of driving into work, a leak has developed from the back of the gasket, which is dripping oil onto the exhaust.I therefore need to find somewhere I can get a new gasket and a reliable garage to fit it in the Blekinge area. The local Subaru place in Karlskrona couldn’t even get the gasket!

Any help would be much apprecitated.

      Thanks,

      Craig.

See if http://www.streetpower.se can help you, they are located in Blekinge. Good luck.

As far as i know the rocker cover gasket should be the same on the swedish GT model. So your local subaru dealer will be able to get the part. You just have to tell them exactly what part you want as they can’t search for it on your VIN number. The changing/fitting of the gasket is just as simple as on a swedish Impreza GT.

            Will do, thanks alot.

How easy is it to change yourself? Anyone know of a how-to document on it anywhere?

You need a 10 mill ratchet ring spanner, that’ll help you no end as it’s a tad cramped between the head and the inner wing (a small ratchet handle is good to have as well).

Remove the airbox, remove the coils from the plugs (on plug coil iirc on the 97’s) – then you definitely need to get a few towels between the uppipe and head, as whatever little amount that is left in the rocker cover will find its way to the uppipe… 😀

Make sure everything around is cleaned properly before you take the cover off, you do *not* want to get dirt into that area.

When I’ve got an engine in a stand, I usually ”glue” on the bottom edge, and up the sides of the outer edge (where the gasket sits), to help with the seal (iirc this is recommended in the workshop manual as well) – but you don’t want silicone all over the valvetrain either, so don’t overdo it…

A major issue I’ve had is that a minute spill on the uppipe while you’ve got the rocker cover off, will smell for a fortnight… 😀 😀 😀 But clean the bottom edge of the head thoroughlly, and you can feel with your hand if it keeps leaking (wait for the uppipe to cool first).

The gasket is the same as on a Swedish Impreza GT 97, so any dealer should be able to help you.

                  Excellent, thanks everyone.

Sounds easy enough. However I might end up snapping one of the bolts off, which is an engine out job to fix apparently! So I think I’ll pay someone to do it!

Naaah…they’re torqued up with something like 10 Nm (I can get the correct number for you later) – you don’t want to overtighten them, as getting a torque wrench down there can be tricky. 😀
When you go for a new gasket, get new gasket rings for the bolts, at least for the lower 3, and new gaskets for the plug holes as well. 🙂

Jan – Fcuk off. 😀 I have barely begun riding bikes! 😀 😀 😀 I’ll give you a call tomorrow, need to catch up on things. 🙂

/J – 2 hours at the motocross track tonight, I am fubar, proper fubar, time for the liquer cabinet methinks…

You want need a tq wrench, you will feel when the tq enough, get some gasket sealer to put on the gasket as well.
If you buy yourself a good ratchet wrench you will safe yourself a lot of hassel. one with a felx head like this http://www.ratchet-wrench.com/showing_2/Flex-Head-Ratchets.html is well worth the money (2-400kr/wrench)can littery save hours of job.

Jerry 😛 yeah do that, you have my new number 🙂
Give me call when you have some time over.
